Tone2 – Cinematic for Electra2

Tone2’s Electra2 is one of the most powerful virtual software synthesizers on the market. It has its own character.  It is sonically versatile.  It’s an outstanding do-it-all synth and a powerful multi-synthesizer capable of creating just about any sound. It’s good for novices and advanced sound designers alike. It can sound smooth, warm, punchy and sterile – you name it.  Electra2 is a very flexible at every angle. It can do Virtual Analog, FM, Sample Playback, Wavetables, Resynthesis, Fractal, Physical Modeling, Phase Distortion and more, whichever ways that you want to combine them. Like many commercial software synthesizers on the market, Electra2 ships with plenty of stock presets. In fact, there are over 1200 production-ready presets made by professional sound designers. It’s equipped with ready-to-go sounds so that you can concentrate on your songs rather than creating sounds from scratch.

The Cinematic for Electra2 sound set aims to expand Electra2’s factory sound library with add-on quality sounds. But most importantly this expansion will give you starter sounds or inspiration for your next masterpiece. It utilizes Electra2’s powerful multi-layer capabilities coupled with sampling and synthesis features. The result is a sound bank that includes rich, unique-sounding presets geared for cinematic, soundtrack, ambient, experimental and TV and film music. Cinematic offers 160 presets made by a team of eight sound designers. This sound bank includes sound categories such as Arps, Atmos, Misc, Pads and Sequences.

After an easy installation, I auditioned the sounds in my home studio and went through the presets. The presets that tickled my ears are as follows:

  1. Cine Sequence – Prejudice – Reminds me of 80’s John Carpenter movies
  2. Cine Arp – Bass Pulsator – Good for action scene sequence
  3. Cine Arp – Kathmandu Chase – Good for car chase sequence
  4. Cine Pad – Red October – Dark pad great for horror scene
  5. Cine Atmos – Unknown – Great atmos for sci-fi thriller
  6. Cine Atmos – The Room – Creepy atmos that reminds me of the movie ‘The Fly’
  7. Cine Atmos – Left Inside – This preset gave me goosebumps
  8. Cine Misc – Voyage Brass – Ultra-modern brass for sci-fi flicks
  9. Cine Misc – Dark Ensemble – Ensemble patch good for dark ambient pieces
  10. Cine Pads Violet – Nice floating, bright pad

There are plenty of other excellent presets in this bank and some I would call ‘fillers’. But there are enough good orchestral sounds, energy-driven sequences and lush pads that will get you going. What I like about this sound bank is that many of the patches responds to pitch wheel, aftertouch and velocity. The patches can also be morphed using the mod wheel. This is great if you’re playing live and into performance control. Overall, this is a great sound bank that I highly recommend, even if it’s a bit pricey as sound banks usually go. Head over to Tone2’s site for Cinematic’s audio demo.

Mode Audio – Eclipse

It’s cinematic all the way with this library chock full of motion effects, atmospheric and dark drones, bass and texture sounds. Geared for ambient, chill, soundtrack and downtempo producers, Eclipse’s 1.14 GB content contains 110 files with samples ranging from 13 seconds to over 1 minute in length. It covers a wide variety of sound and super versatile that modern day TV & film composers/scorers will find this useful. Twenty nine atmospheric drones and nineteen dark drones make up this library mainly, but for me the 27 carefully-designed movements SFX samples are the highlight of this library. The nineteen texture samples are great for time stretching – especially if you load them in the app called “paulstretch” for extreme time stretching. And then you can use them as a bed or background in you ambient compositions. Overall, an impressive sample pack that is sonically diverse.

Applied Acoustic Systems – Cinematix for Chromaphone 2

Montreal’s Applied Acoustic Systems has built an extensive expansion catalog for their popular Chromaphone 2 acoustic object synthesizer. There are currently nine sound packs (and counting) for Chromaphone 2 available for their Sound Bank Series. This one, created by sound designer Christian Laffitte, extends Chromaphone 2 as a machine capable of producing impactful cinematic sounds. Whether it’s action sequences or dizzyingly fast-paced scenes, with its focus on hits and percussions, Cinematix has got you covered for modern day scoring. What Christian Laffitte did here is very creative, and for him to program these presets and squeeze the life out of Chromaphone’s capabilities is nothing short of amazing. Cinematix consists of 100 presets, and are grouped in categories such as percussions, snares, toms, cymbals, chimes and bells, hits, strings and pads, effects and arpeggiators for easy browsing, loading and referencing.

When I auditioned the presets in my studio, here are the ones that I liked or find useful in productions:

  1. All Percussions, Snares, Toms, Cymbals are excellent presets as you can build yourself a percussion rack (kit) using these sounds.
  2. The Hits presets are capable of adding high impact on cinematic tracks as they are effected with large hall reverb, especially the preset called Big Boom. It has an impactful hit sound.
  3. ST Medieval Harp – Beautiful sounding harp. You can tweak the Resonator A’s Decay and Release to fit your liking.
  4. PD Warmer – A sinister, metallic sounding pad
  5. SFX Ancient Perc – A dull, hollow-sounding percussion preset
  6. All of Arpeggiators presets because they can be used in ethnotronica pieces. This will help you drive your tracks.

All in all, this is a good set of presets geared for game, TV and big screen music. The beauty of this sound set is that you have a collection of starter sounds that you can layer with other sounds or tweak the presets to your heart’s content. Overall, a good number of well-designed presets.

Applied Acoustic Systems – Epicycles for Chromaphone 2

An unsettling and opaque collection of new sounds, Epicycles was created by Atlanta-based sound designer Richard Devine. If you’re unfamiliar with Devine’s work, he has released five electronica albums (I have some of his IDM, glitch albums and they are great), has done scoring for TV and movies, and has provided sounds for major companies such as Apple, Audi, BMW, Coke, Nestlé, Nike, and many more. In the past, he has released a sound bank for Chromaphone 2 called Microsound Textures, which I really liked. And this time, Epicycles is another superb sound bank of his. In this 111-preset collection you’ll find common categories such as basses, strings and pads, soundscapes, plucked strings, keys, synths, percussions and arps. No doubt, this sound bank would be useful for making electronica pieces. As I’ve come to expect from Richard Devine, Epicycles includes a good number of soundscapes, synths and SFX presets. These are the strength of this library, along with the plucked strings, which are gorgeous-sounding and expertly programmed. The pad presets are wonderful and makes Chromaphone a more than capable ambient synth. The twenty seven percussion patches are superb, too. They’re vivid and full of variety. Two thumbs up.

Loopmasters – Irievibrations: Modern Roots Reggae

At 1.59 GB, Irievibrations: Modern Roots Reggae is packed with loops, one-hits and samples. It is for producers of reggae, dub, dance-hall and ska music. Modern Roots Reggae includes guitars, Rhodes, pianos, Korg MS20, Moogs and brass, along with a generous amount of live drum loops – with percussion, hats and fills to round things out. All samples have been key, tempo and info-tagged for easy reference. What I like about this pack is that it sounds “dubby”, clean, polished and super laid-back. The live drums are smokin’, the skankin’ guitar phrases and roots piano loops are all killers and stunningly performed. The keys loops are even more inspiring, containing 38 files, while the 88 dub FX provide you with magic to inject into your tracks. Overall, this is a great sample pack that is well recorded and expertly edited at the Irievibrations Studio in Vienna, Austria, using the finest analog audio equipment, rare vintage microphones and high-end audio gear.

Synapse Audio – World of Cinematic for Dune 2

Synapse Audio is back with yet another sound set for Dune 2 – their multi-award winning software synthesizer. They try to cater to cinematic producers this time with World of Cinematic. This new sound bank was created by Kevin Schroeder, a versatile and prolific sound designer. He is the man behind Synapse Audio’s excellent Premium Trance sound set, as well as provided stock presets for Dune 2. With 68 high-quality patches, World of Cinematic is sure to inspire you instantly. When I auditioned the patches, it really ‘wowed’ me and inspired by it.

Here are some of the patches that I like:

  1. AR Movie Pike – Great for short action sequence
  2. AR Solution – Growling bass with crazy filter setting
  3. BA Black Widow – Reminds me of old 80’s sci-fi movie
  4. BA Electro Lord – Fat and nasty bass for adding impact to a scene
  5. BA Hardcorer – An arpeggiated bass with a monster attack
  6. DR Zoomer Impact – An impact drum sound with huge reverberation
  7. FX Crying Strings – A slow-attack string sound that is totally sinister
  8. KY Scene Piano – Soft patch good for horror movies
  9. PD Back in the 80s – Sort of Vangelis-type pad
  10. SQ Wormhole – Ultra-modern sequence for killer action scene

These are very high quality patches that absolutely sound punchy and require less parameter tweaking. From start to finish, I had a good session of auditioning the patches – just me and my MIDI controller in my studio hammering the keys and admiring the sound of patch after patch. Patches like the cello, cymbal hit, horn, soft piano and many other sounds will make you wonder how it is even possible to get such sounds from a subtractive synthesizer. But Dune 2 is more than capable and a very versatile synthesizer. For $20, this is a good buy. Head over to Synapse Audio website to listen and watch the demo of World of Cinematic via YouTube.

Mode Audio – Fissure

Sample-ware provider Mode Audio is making quite an impression with this glitch-themed pack, and the sounds are absolutely great. Their journey to release electronica-based sound-ware continues with this percussion-packed glitch collection. One hundred fifteen kick samples starts things off, followed by 100 smashing snares that are crunchy and punchy. To round things out, Fissure includes 100 hi hat, 50 percussion, 25 tom and 45 glitch SFX samples. What’s lovely about this pack is that the kick, snares and toms have different variations of distorted, driven and glitch samples. Also included are twelve pre-mixed and matched drum kit presets for Ableton Live, Reason and Logic Pro. This is convenient for easy preset loading and saves you time setting up a drum kit in the aforementioned sequencers. All in all, you get 435 drum hits in a tiny 63 MB download size. Fissure is definitely geared for producers of glitch, IDM, leftfield and experimental music, but it also suits hip hop, trap, house and other electronica sub-genres. So what do I think of Fissure? As always, Mode Audio’s samples sound crisp and clean, with a lot of punch. To those of you looking for different drum flavors in your sample arsenal, Fissure is worth considering.
