Samplephonics – Ghosting Season: Post Electronic

Plenty of electronic artists have done it in the past, but it’s great to know that Ghosting Season has finally leaped into the foray of releasing their own sample libraries (via Samplephonics) for the masses to enjoy. Ghosting Season: Post Electronic is a library with over 1 GB of loops, one shots and software sampler instruments for major brands that can be used over and over for producing post rock, electronica, ambient, drone, atmospheric and film music. Given its size, this sample pack covers more than just the sub-electronica genres I listed above. The samples are haunting, complex, completely refreshing and it’s got that Ghosting Season signature sound written all over it (If you don’t know what I mean, just go to their band camp site and listen to their compositions). I love the ‘Atmospheric’ folder as there are some good drone sounds included, especially the guitar drones. I also dig the drums folder as they are programmed expertly and offer immense choice. Overall, this is a brilliant sample set that everyone should check out.

Bluezone Corporation – Bomb Blast

Following last issue’s offering, the innovative minds at Bluezone have created, yet again, a very unique sample library called Bomb Blast. This is a collection of explosions, weapon sounds and debris sound elements that are suitable for films, trailers, video games and other productions that require such dynamic effects. Not only does this pack contain explosion impacts, but there are also 3 folders of falling glass, metal and stone debris sounds included. Though this library is only at 290 MB, this is high quality stuffs. The recording is great and is presented in WAV and AIFF formats. The content covers pretty much the all the areas of explosions, but expect nothing more as this is not an all-round effects library.  Kaboom!

Big Fish Audio – 1970’s Funk and Soul

This new library from Big Fish Audio/Funk Soul Productions focuses on the sounds that dominated the airwaves in the 70’s era. As the name suggests, 1970’s Funk and Soul has all the sample ingredients to produce Funk, Soul and R&B styles that captures the sound of Detroit Soul, Philly Soul, Oakland Funk and more. Arranged as fourteen song construction kits, tempos range from 70 to 130 BPM in various keys and each kit includes all individual elements and demo full mix. Inside each kit you’ll find various sounds such as guitar, bass, drum, conga, organ, clavinet, flute, piano and a big horn section that were performed live by seasoned musicians. The playing is vibrant and the vibe is very authentic – all caught on tape. My favorite samples are, of course, the horns and the guitars – especially the wah wah’s and strums. So tasty.

If you’ve been trying to relive the funk & soul style of the early 70’s-80’s and have failed in your production, give your compositions some juice with this groovy sample pack from Big Fish. I am giving this thumbs up for a good effort in imitating the sounds of funk.

Loopmasters – Robotica

This sample pack pays homage and trips back to the days of late 70’s and 80’s when electronic toy instruments rule the world. Think Speak & Spell, Word Buddy, Apple I & II sounds and those 8-bit lo-fi drum machines of yesteryear. Robitica comprises a wide selection of really futuristic sounds including ccrunchy drums, nasty glitch loops, noisy melodies and circuit bent hits and stabs. Also included are some nicely recorded vocoded phrases, in which I think is the highlight of this library. Sound-wise, this is a very well-recorded, well-produced library. But what’s impressive is how the raw sound recording were processed using some of the best sophisticated audio effects units for that polished sound. They were then transferred to a vintage reel to reel tape machine for some analog warmth. All in all, this sample pack weights at 895 MB with audio formats such as WAV, Apple Loops and REX2 supported. So what do I think? There’s a distinct quirkiness to Robotica that is going to inspire countless numbers of electronica producers to launch their DAWS and start writing music.

Zero-G – Electro Cinematic

Nowadays it seems that plenty of sample library developers have been cranking out cutting edge soundscapes and cinematic libraries for soundtrack, film, TV and video game music. Zero-G’s latest library fits perfectly in that category. This pack features 2.5GB of 24-bit/44.1kHz WAV, AIFF Apple loops and REX2 audio, with a total of almost 1300 individual samples separated into 5 main folders of Soundscapes, Pads, Textures, SFX and Loops. Instrument patches for popular software samplers such as EXS24, HALion, Kontakt and NN-XT are also supported. The sounds range from swiftly-moving electronic percussion, tortured beats, morphing bass lines, pulsing sequences to ethereal pads, eerie drones, synthetic textures and otherworldly sound effects. We are talking about over-the-top sound design, complicated programming and deep sonic wizardry in making this sample pack. So props to the producer of this library. It is hard to fault this collection, and after auditioning the Soundscape folder I just can’t get enough of the sounds! The 100 Texture samples are also well made. If you need some inspiring up-to-date samples for your futuristic, modern compositions, Electro Cinematic really offers some versatile sounds.

Big Fish Audio – Country Folk

Country Folk is one vast sample set from Big Fish Audio/Dieguis Productions that is suitable for Contemporary Folk, Bluegrass and Americana Roots. This pack is massive and weighs in at 6 GB with different audio formats (24-bit files) and software samplers supported. Basically, this is a construction-kit-type library that is composed of twelve folders with all the elements/stems needed to kick start your songwriting process. A full mix file is included to showcase what the stems are capable of collectively. Recorded samples from organic instruments include mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar, fiddle, cello, string section and percussion instruments. The twelve construction kits cover traditional styles but can be used for newer, contemporary sound. There are plenty of licks, chord progressions, riffs, strums and whatnot to choose from the different elements available. Also, BFA has made this library easy to use by clearly tagging each sample with tempo and key information.

Sound-wise, this is one of the cleanest libraries I have ever reviewed. The loops sound clear and crisp that serve excellent track foundations. The acoustic and electric guitars are great as they have so much presence. The djembe, shakers and tambourine samples are welcome additions, too, as they add percussion flavor to this string-filled library. So, if you’re ready to try out some bluegrass, folk and country samples to inject into you productions, give Country Folk some whirl and lovin’.

Loopmasters – Double Tiger Presents Horns of Dub

One hundred eighty eight loops geared squarely at producers of dub, roots reggae and ska music. Horns of Dub is a 796 MB of material recorded live using analogue signal path for full-on rawness and warmth.  This pack is delivered in 24-bit WAV, REX2 and Apple Loops format. Horns of Dub comprise 22 themes, and each theme is composed of melodies, harmonies, chord stabs and different loop variation. It is similar to a construction kit library, but you’ll only find trombone, trumpet and saxophone sounds. The files are clearly labeled indicating tempo and key information for maximum flexibility. Sounds are divided into two groups of dry and processed. Dry files are just that – they are recorded dry as is. Dub, on the other hand, is an effected version of the original sounds that are drenched in FX. I can see myself using the dub version a lot as they have an impressive rhythmic interest and cool vibe. They are very inspirational especially if you’re just starting out with you next composition. Verdict: Although Horns of Dub focuses on dub, it covers a wide genre of suitable for dance as well.

Samplephonics – Soundscape Electronica

This library is mainly designed for producing soundscape and down-tempo electronica, with samples ranging from lush synth sounds to well-crafted SFX. Created by Jonathan Batchelor, Soundscape Electronica includes Rhodes, strings, pianos & chimes, basses and some expertly programmed glitch-based drums. This sample pack weighs in at almost 900 MB and is offered in various audio formats (24 bit), as well as soft sampler instruments such as Kontakt, NN-XT, EXS24, etc. The library is basically broken into 8 folders of Bass, Drum, FX, One Shots, Organic, Percussion, Synth and Sampler Instruments – all organized neatly with tempo and key information for easy auditioning and flexibility.

The vast majority of the samples are spot-on to the genre, and I think the sound designer has put a great effort in creating the sounds. I love the ‘Synth’ folder as there are plenty of inspirational sounds contained. But the ‘Percussion’ folder offers some of the coolest off-kilter patterns that are ready for prime time. Great edgy stuff from Samplephonics.

Big Fish Audio – Cinematic Motion

Another construction kit collection of cinematic, ambient, soundscape and atmospheric samples from Big Fish Audio, and this one suits the genre it tries to target extremely well. There are twelve kits in total and each kit has all the sound elements/stems to construct polished tracks or to use individual elements as song starters for you next masterpiece. There are plenty of things you can do with the 299 (24-bit WAV) files of cinematic pulses, rhythmic sequences, soundscapes, atmospheres and textures included in Cinematic Motion. They can be used as song starters or foundations for new tracks, they can be augmented into your original composition or can simply be an inspiration if you have become dry and uninspired in the writing process. I have high expectation about this library and the good thing is that the loops are of high quality and sonically top notch. I’m particularly fond of the pads and drone samples because they are finely crafted and sound very rich. The pulse pianos are also excellent as they have been processed with just the right amount of ambience.

If you need the next set of cinematic samples for your next piece, BFA has made it easier for you with Cinematic Motion. Although there are only twelve kits included, the possibilities of creating your track from start to finish are endless.
