Bluezone Corporation Dioxide

This pack is comprised of 1.8 GB of 24-bit/44.1 kHz samples divided into folders of drones and special effects. Sound-wise, it falls into the soundscape and ambience vein, which Bluezone Corporation is really good at. The 111 WAV-format stereo samples were well recorded and carefully edited, with twisted effects and studio trickery applied all over the place. The sounds themselves are designed to pretty much compliment any mixes if you’re composing tracks for ambient, experimental, avant garde, TV series, feature films and game music. If that’s right up your alley then you’re going to love this sample pack. Overall, Dioxide is a great sample library with good set of sounds that is going to elevate your tracks to the next level.

Sony Creative Software – Sunrise Soul

Sunrise Soul a good starter original material if you want a broad-ranging collection of urban and soul sounds. With eight construction kits, it is geared to cover Rn’B, Soul and Hip-Hop genres. There’s even a bonus folder called “Funky RnB Vocal” thrown in for good measure. Produced by John Hobart at Scorpio Music Productions in LA, you’ll find all kinds of suave loops such as drum patterns, strings, mono synth riffs, smooth saxes, subtle pads, mellow acoustic guitars, acoustic and electric pianos, solo organ riffs and more – all packaged as 24-bit, Acid WAV format. The samples are well recorded and sound clean throughout. The programming and performances of the instruments are also top notch – as it definitely has that “soul” vibe embedded once you start auditioning the loops in your DAW or audio editor program. Whether you’re adding a sample library to your collection or looking for a sample pack to augment into your own mixes, Sunrise Soul is a good place to start.

Samplephonics – Complex Percussion & Texture

Percussion and ambience is the name of the game in Samplephonic’s new Complex Percussion & Texture sample library. If you’re into off-kilter drums and percussion and twisted evolving textures, this library has a lot to offer.  Firstly, the drum loops are very versatile and punchy and they sound spacious. They are programmed very well and would fit in today’s modern productions, especially IDM and glitch music. Don’t expect four-on-the-floor bangers in this collection, though. Secondly, the percussion loops are nothing like percussion loops you would hear normally. They’re complex rhythms suitable for cutting-edge electronica. They have been designed to sound deeply synthesized. It’s a very intelligent library that screams “inspiration”. With 325 loops and 112 one-shots, there’s plenty to play with. Overall, this 1.2 GB collection is a winner in my book. The drum and percussion loops alone are worth the asking price. The eighty (80) texture samples are just icing on the cake.

Niche Audio – DnB Skyline

DnB Skyline is a sample pack by Niche Audio that focuses on the hard-hitting sound of electronic music. This is a fresh take on the drum and bass sub-genre that has been thriving for decades. This pack is delivered into three different formats of Native Instruments Maschine, Ableton Live and Wav samples. With Maschine and Live you get 13 starter projects or kits to work in those formats. All kits have been designed to take advantage of Live and Maschine’s features including their on-board effects. If you opt for the 288 WAV samples, you’ll also receive 33 patches for popular software samplers such as Kontakt, EXS24, SFZ, NN-XT and Halion. Loading is quick and easy and each preset has the samples mapped accordingly. Sound-wise, much of the drum samples possess a drier sound. Those who love to tweak samples will have fun doing so, as there is room for twisting and mangling. Overall, a nice collection of inspiring materials.

Big Fish Audio – Superfly: Retro Funky Kits

With ten construction kits covering funk, Rn’B and soul genres, Superfly from Big Fish Audio is a good collection to start when looking for urban samples with a nice funky, groovy vibe. Weighing in at 1.6 GB, audio formats includes Acidized WAV, Apple Loops and Rex2 files. Each kit is broken down into different sounds complete with stems or elements that you need to drop into any new or existing project. A mix file is also included in each folder showcasing what the elements sound like when mixed altogether. Instrument loops include drums, solo Minimoogs, bass, clavinet, horns, strings, guitars, sax, piano and more. Imagine all the sounds that dominated in the 70’s that you heard on the radio stations, especially disco and funk – it’s all here. What I like about this library is that samples are pretty upbeat, never dull. The strings and Rhodes pianos sound warm and very dated. Dated, I mean, in a positive way. Overall, this is a solid release.

Samplephonics – Vintage Brass

When I reviewed Samplephonic’s Soulful Brass sample pack for our March issue, I had nothing but praises for that pack. Now, it’s May and what we have here is another brass pack called “Vintage Brass”. This library is a collection of trumpet and flugelhorn loops and one-shots that were recorded using classic recording gear for that warm, vintage, old-style vibe to inject into your next track. The samples are grouped in construction kit-style folders. Each folder has key and tempo information, with all the elements needed to construct a “brass section”. The “Loops” folder is split into 4 tempos of 110, 125, 140 and 185 BPM. It contains many trumpet riffs and solos. Furthermore, another folder called “One Shots” includes FX, stabs, falls, swells and incidental sounds that are useful as fillers in an arrangement. This is really one tough sample library to beat. The sounds are of good quality and can be used for any genre, especially dub and jazzy stuff. It’s a superb collection and a great value.

Black Octopus – Banshee: Cory Friesenhan Vocal Session 2

Black Octopus Vocal Sessions Vol. 2 is a sequel sample library performed by Cory Friesenhan.  This vocal pack is aimed at electronic, pop and EDM producers alike who are looking to complete their productions with voice samples. Expect to find 1.4 GB of 44.1 kHz/24-bit loop samples in WAV stereo format. Similar to Vol. 1, Vocal Session 2 includes fifteen constructions kits – complete with verses, choruses, leads, harmonies, melodies, alternate takes and more. All fifteen kits are tagged with tempo and root-key information for easy browsing and auditioning. In addition to the main dry samples, there is also a bonus section of effected vocals that were processed with hypnotic delay and lush reverb. Of all the samples folder included, this is my favorite of the bunch – simply because they sound fabulous with just the right amount of effects. This is another good library from Black Octopus and Cory Friesenhan’s performance is great. That being said, I think Vocal Session 2 is a good, inspiring vocal resource geared for dance music.

Sony Creative Software – EVAC Sessions: Dark Electronica

This premium collection from Sony Creative Software comprises 675 MB of 44.1 kHz/24-bit samples that are broken into ten “Session” folders, plus extra folders of nearly 200 Arp Stabs, Composite FX, Drums and Misc. FX samples in the one-shot category. Each folder combines synth melodies, modern basses, stretched atmospheres, unstable FX’s, swell pads, glitchy and electro beats. Stylistically, things are a bit in the dark side of electronica with plenty of sonic consistency in the genre. Producer Jeremy Goldstein took the classic construction kit approach on making this library and stuffed it with the essential elements needed to construct your own compositions for TV series, trailer soundtracks or game music. I love the “Session” folders as they have plenty of sounds to play with, but the one shot folder called “Composite FX” have some of the best inspiring selection of FX samples I’ve ever auditioned.

Samplephonics – Twisted Cinematics

A 769 MB collection of FX, pianos, guitars, textures, drums, synths, strings, organs, basses and more, Twisted Cinematics is a sample pack by producer Glen R. Nicholls. It is a library inspired by the late 70’s and 80’s horror and sci-fi soundtracks. Think popular movie favorites such as Them, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Blob, Near Dark, The Lost Boys and you’ll get the idea. This library is broken into 20 construction kits (188 loops total), and each kit includes all the elements you need to form an arrangement or use each samples to augment into your own songs. What I notice though is that there are plenty of ear-catching digital samples, especially the drums and synths, ideal for soundtracks and games music. As I was auditioning each sample, the sounds transported me back to 80’s memory lane. It’s a superb collection and a great value. I say check it out.

Monster Sounds – Epic Film Score & Breakbeat Science

Glen Nichols AKA Future Funk Squad has tackled some of the crushing remixing duties known to DJs and producers. He has quite made a name for himself remixing tracks for Nine Inch Nails, Stanton Warriors, The Prodigy and more. The list is impressive. Also impressive is this library of his called Epic Film Score & Breakbeat Science for Monster Sounds. His signature sound-quality is stamped all over the samples. From epic pads to menacing beats, Epic Film Score & Breakbeat Science will delight even the most demanding producers. This pack weighs in at 2.6 GB and there are plenty of 44.1 kHz/24-bit of loops and one-shots to play with. Samples include synth and music loops, drums, bass, FX, orchestral and huge amounts of drum and bass hits. Popular software samplers such as NN-XT, EXS24, Kontakt, Halion and SFZ formats are also supported. What I really like about this pack are the cinematic style atmospherics you get. They are very inspirational that you just want to drop them in each of your compositions.

The KLI version supports patches for Native Instruments’ Kontakt software sampler. Additionally, if you opt for the KLI version, a bonus content of 808 sub hits and sampler patches are also included. Tempos range from a slow-mo 70 BPM to a mid-tempo 125 BPM. Each kit offers a full mix file and stems needed to start on a new or existing project. Samplephonics Music for Media

Music For Media by Samplephonics is library that is geared for quick song construction for TV series, film, trailer and commercial music. This is an enormous source of sampling material weighing in at 1.1 GB. The 44.1 kHz/24-bit samples are delivered in standard audio formats such as Apple Loops, Acidized WAV and Rex2 formats. The vibe of Music for Media is good and it is similar to the ones you hear on TV commercials. It has a hint of laid back, slick, chill kind of music. No epic pads or thunderous taikos – just a good set of solid samples that can be used for a wide variety of producing situations. The synths are nice and effective and the drums sound clean and polished. Like many of Samplephonics’ libraries, this pack is also delivered in construction kit format. You get all the elements needed to start a composition or use the samples to plug holes in your pre-existing mixes. With 300 loops and idents to play with, this pack is great to have, especially if you’re looking to add a new sound source to your sample vault.

Sounds of Revolution – Minimal Techno Revolution 4

Oliver Schmitt is a man on mission. He has crafted yet another sample pack for the Minimal Techno Series. As the name suggests, this is the fourth volume and like its predecessors, it is geared mostly for writing techno, EDM and electronica music. From classic analog-sounding drum patterns to ripping bass, soaring solo synths to modern effects, MTR4 has got you covered with techno sampling material. At 1.41 GB, this pack is delivered in 24-bit WAV files of 1289 total samples. Software samplers such as Kontakt and EXS24 are supported. All the loops have a fixed tempo of 127 BPM – which is pretty standard if you’re producing dance – and were recorded in various keys. Sound-wise, it’s very polished and the programming is great for this type of musical style. This is what you would normally find, and what I’ve expected, in a four-on-the-floor sample library. It’s formulated to allow you to easily arrange and mix on-the-fly. Oliver Schmitt has laid the ground work here, folks! What I like about this pack is that there is room for processing the samples. All you have to do is apply your imagination and creativity to sound fresh.

Zero-G – Aftershock: Extreme Audio Cinematics

Si Begg is back in the sample fold with his latest for Zero-G – a library geared for cinematic/trailer, TV series, game and experimental electronica music. Aftershock is simply the result of his combined style and high level of studio know-how. It is an intelligent-sounding library that the pro media and experimental musicians can benefit from. There’s a level of sonic consistency amongst the 594 WAV samples included. And that’s the goal of Aftershock is to inspire you with great cutting-edge sound design. Folders of samples include sweeps, risers, morphs and transforms, hits, drones and tones, bass effects, abstract events and combined effects. Surprisingly, there’s a folder called “Reverse FX” with offerings that are very good for augmenting effects into your mixes. Although they are only 2 to 6 seconds long, the reverse glitches and noises are my favorites. I really like Si Begg’s libraries. Ever since Distorted Dancefloor was released I’ve been an admirer of his work. This one is a keeper and will be useful for many, many years to come.

Bluezone Corporation Exosuit: Hybrid Exoskeleton Sound Effects

Similar to titles Autobots and Assault Mech, Exosuit is another modern-futuristic sample library from Bluezone Corporation that offers 250 WAV/AIFF samples for use in sci-fi movies, TV and video game productions. As the name suggests, this sample pack will give you sounds such as metallic, chains, whooshes, alien weaponry and all kinds of robotic elements that will impact and transform your mixes the way you like them to. The samples are highly useable in every project. They were well recorded using various sources and processed meticulously using high-end gear. So what do I think of Exosuit? This is a good offering from Bluezone and a fine source of futuristic sounds. There are plenty of short samples I quite appreciat that I could further twist them. Overall, this is a great pack that can add sonic depth into your music for media productions.
